Pool Design Ideas: Freeform Desert Oasis

Our Pool Design Ideas series was created to help spark ideas of what might be a good fit for you in your backyard. When you’re starting the process of building a pool, there are numerous decisions to make. A great place to get started is with the pool design and design elements. Whether it’s a freeform or geometric design, with modern, tuscan, or retro design elements; it’s really about the look that fits your home.

At California Pools & Landscape, we’ve been creating custom pools in the valley of the sun for more than 35 years. We’ve designed thousands of freeform pools of all shapes and sizes, to meet the desires of every client.

About This Cave Creek Natural Treasure

This Cave Creek client came to California Pools & Landscape with dreams of creating a natural backyard environment that would compliment their picturesque desert setting. Our design team went to work, creating a design that let nature come into the backyard. Creating multiple destinations for swimming, recreation and relaxation was important for this homeowner in order to maximize the backyard.

The freeform pool was designed to create a natural environment with the use of boulders, landscaping and the materials selected. With multiple usable areas in the backyard, this space has something for everyone. The different tiered levels in the yard create a natural flow with excellent spaces for entertainment. Natural concrete pavers carry throughout the design path of this oasis, adding earthy tones. The natural rock waterfall immediately grabs your attention for its beauty and ambiance that it adds to the oasis.

A Freeform Pool & Spa Design

The freeform pool and overflow spa with the natural rock waterfall are the stars of this oasis. The lagoon shaped pool features a baja shelf that sits 15” under the waterline and offers 44sqft of space to relax. There are multiple boulders that sit on the pool’s edge and underwater that contribute greatly to the natural feel of the environment.

The pool’s Topaz Sea Glass Pebble interior with double abalone sparkles in the Arizona sun, contrasting beautifully with the naturally colored concrete coping. The Enchanted Grey waterline tile adds another natural component to the design, flowing nicely into the Brown Boulders along the pool’s edge.

The natural waterfall is 8’ wide with overflow from the spa trickling down towards the pool along with its own water source. The design of the waterfall feels organic like something you would see at the end of a long hike.

The spa design in this project is special as well, sitting at a higher elevation than the pool. With a sit and spin design, there is a larger perimeter to sit on and easily enter the spa. The spa features a natural spillway into the rock waterfall with natural stone on the visible spillway. The spa is completely hidden from view when you’re inside of the pool thanks to the rock waterfall.

Incorporating Design Elements Throughout The Yard

The design of the yard is tied together with the natural concrete pavers that surround all of the activity areas and walkways throughout the yard. There is a large deck just outside of the home that offers plenty of area for entertainment with a built-in bbq grill. Extensive desert landscaping in planters throughout the yard really makes this backyard pop! The combination of cactus, trees, desert flora and succulents really add a beautiful color splash and bring all the tones of desert living.

Designing Your Own Backyard Oasis

Hopefully these pool design ideas helped you figure out some design elements that you might enjoy in your backyard design. Selecting pool and backyard elements as well as design features is a fun part of the process. It’s important to consider what will fit into your home’s environment and be enjoyed by you and your family.

The elements in this Cave Creek backyard are just a few of the many design options that we have available at California Pools & Landscape. We’ve built a page that houses all of the freeform design ideas that could create an ultimate backyard experience. To see all more design ideas visit our Photo Galleries.
