Image

Modern

A modern pool style offers elegant simplicity with straight-lined edges and sharp corners. Clients who enjoy a more contemporary backyard setting often favor these pools. Modern pools can be further enhanced by additions like vanishing edges, zero edges, and varied entry options. Modern pools are the only pools capable of having a built-in cover.
Image

Organic

Organic pools take inspiration from nature, with freeform shapes and flowing curves that create a calm, lagoon-like vibe. Designed to blend effortlessly with surrounding landscapes, they are perfect for those who want a serene, natural setting that prioritizes relaxation and visual harmony.
Geometric Pool

Geometric

Geometric pools emphasize structure and precision, featuring clean lines and sharp angles for a sleek, modern appearance. These designs maximize space efficiency and adaptability, making them ideal for homeowners who want to complement minimalist architecture or achieve a polished outdoor look.
Image

Freeform

Freeform pool shapes are those which take on any curvilinear form with no set of rules or shapes. This option is optimal for those wanting natural-like character. Due to the lagoon style that freeform pools provide, adding naturalistic landscaping throughout your backyard can enhance the overall appearance.
Image

Grecian

Grecian pool designs draw from classical Greek architecture and showcase a rectangular shape with clipped or angled corners. These pools exude a timeless elegance, balancing traditional elements with a contemporary aesthetic. They work seamlessly in both formal and casual outdoor spaces while adding a refined touch to your backyard.
Image

Tuscan

Echoing the formal elements found in ancient art, Tuscan pools start as rectangles and then get pushed and pulled into something completely different. Most are designed on an axis and are generally a mirror image when split in two. Tuscan pools feature stylized corners and rounded ends and blend well with Grecian or classical-themed homes.
Image

Retro

Retro designs are based on some of the original pool shapes that emerged during the midcentury modern design era. Retro yards were designed to emphasize site lines, open flow from space to space, and provide a smooth transition from indoors to outdoors. Pool shapes reflect the clean style with simple curves and geometric shapes replacing busy or highly ornamental details.

Pool Surfaces

Pebble Pool Interior

Pebble Pool Interior

Traditional Pebble pool finishes are highly sought after for their durability and resistance to pool chemicals. Composed of smooth river pebbles embedded in the surface, they provide a natural texture with exceptional longevity. With a wide range of colors and combinations, you can customize your pool to suit your backyard's style. For homeowners seeking a low-maintenance and visually appealing option, pebble finishes deliver the perfect blend of practicality and beauty.
Sea Glass Pebble Interior

Sea Glass Pebble Interior

Our proprietary pool interior, Sea Glass Pebble, provides a smooth and luxurious texture, ideal for comfortable swimming. This interior is enhanced with abalone shells and iridescent glass beads, which deliver captive, light-catching brilliance that elevates any pool's look. Its versatile color options allow for a fully customized design that complements your personal style. With superior durability and low maintenance, Sea Glass Pebble is a practical, elegant choice for creating a pool that is both visually stunning and functional.
Plaster Pool Interior

Plaster Pool Interior

Classic plaster pool finishes have been a timeless choice since the 1960s, known for their smooth, white surface that creates a beautiful sky-blue water effect. Made from a marble-based mix, this finish delivers a clean and elegant look that complements a resort-style backyard. Though less durable than pebble or Sea Glass options, plaster remains a favorite for homeowners seeking a traditional aesthetic with a balance of simplicity, affordability, and classic charm.

The Process of Building Your Inground Pool

Building an inground pool is an exciting and significant investment. At California Pools & Landscape, we ensure a smooth, stress-free experience with every step. Hereโ€™s a detailed breakdown of what to expect:
Image

01
Welcome, Planning & Kick-Off

  • Consultation & Design: Our expert designers will collaborate with you to create a custom pool plan tailored to your backyard and lifestyle. We'll guide you through every feature, from shape to water elements, ensuring the pool aligns with your vision.
  • Pre-site Inspection: We conduct an on-site inspection to assess yard access, verify measurements, setbacks, elevations, and utility locations. This ensures all details are accounted for before beginning construction.
  • Blue Stake Utility Marking: We work with Blue Stake, a public service that identifies all public utility lines to avoid any disruption during construction.
  • Drafting & Permit Submittal: Our in-house draftsperson will take the renderings and site report to create a detailed CAD-engineered plan. Once finalized, we submit it to your local municipality for permit approval. The turnaround varies by location.
Image

02
Construction & Installation

  • Layout & Excavation: Before digging, we mark the outline of your pool, deck, and structures on the ground, giving you a chance to approve the shape and position. Once approved, our team begins excavation using high-strength shotcrete to create the pool shell.
  • Plumbing & Electrical Installation: We install energy-efficient plumbing and electrical systems, including pumps, filters, and lighting. Our plumbers and electricians follow a detailed plan to ensure everything is correctly positioned for optimal performance.
  • Rebar & Shotcrete Shell: Steel rebar is laid in a grid pattern for reinforcement, followed by the application of shotcrete to form the pool shell. We use high-strength shotcrete that exceeds industry standards, ensuring long-term durability.
  • Pre-Shotcrete Inspection: Before applying shotcrete, we schedule a "Pre-Gunite" inspection with the local municipality to ensure all is compliant.
  • Custom Features Installation: During construction, any custom features such as Baja shelves, waterfalls, and spas are installed with precision, adding both beauty and function to your pool.
Image

03
Hardscape, Finishes, & Final Touches

  • Masonry & Decking: Once the pool shell is in place, we focus on hardscape elements like masonry and decking. Whether you choose concrete, travertine, or artistic pavers, our experts ensure all hardscape work complements your overall design.
  • Water Features & Finishing Touches: Features like waterfalls, fire pits, and decorative tiles are installed to bring your vision to life. We also handle the integration of additional utilities like landscape lighting and irrigation.
  • Final Inspection & Orientation: After completing the construction, we schedule a final inspection with the local municipality to ensure all safety and structural requirements are met. Once approved, we conduct an orientation with you to familiarize you with your pool's features and maintenance tips.
Image

04
Start-Up & Landscaping

  • Pool Start-Up: After the pool is filled, our start-up crew will fine-tune the water chemistry and ensure everything functions correctly. This phase also includes the installation of the final interior surface, whether youโ€™ve chosen plaster or Sea Glass Pebble.
  • Landscaping: We finish by ensuring your yard is restored and ready for landscaping. We can also assist with planting, irrigation, and finishing touches to create a seamless backyard oasis.

We have built 3 pools in AZ with 3 different companies, and it is no contest; California Pools has come out on top. Fantastic customer service from day 1 thru swim day. No detail left unattended to. The company truly cares about your happiness and satisfaction and it shows in the quality of the work at every stage. Andy and Amy Gilbert, AZ

Very easy to work with and they are fast and responsive at communicating and answering any questions you have through out the project. Their App was the best. It lays out timelines and updated regularly of every last phase of the project. Big shout out to Nadine Chapman, our scheduler! Also enjoyed working with Steve Dreher who made sure we were happy with our project. Mike Lillis was our sales manager and ultimately it was him that made us choose CalPools. We had bids with 3 other companies but he was so responsive unlike the other companies we felt most comfortable going with CalPools.

My 15 year old Hayward pool & spa heater went out. My pool maintenance person recommended a new heater for $5,000. I called CP&L on the chance they had references for techs for my Cal Pool. I was transferred immediately to Kathy, their service coordinator. Who knew? Kathy who handles scheduling the techs responded quickly and got me scheduled for a service call within a very reasonable amount of time, and her communication was excellent. She also worked well with me to accommodate my timing needs. The very experienced tech who arrived, Ryan, was able to diagnose the problem within mere minutes and as a result I will spend less than 10% of the original recommendation for replacement. What a great team, and a great Christmas present. Highly...HIGHLY recommend them.

We requested bids for a new pool build from 4 different companies and chose California Pools due to their professionalism and word of mouth reviews. They were very upfront with the timeframe of the build times and walked us through what to expect. Our project manager Christian Pierre and our construction manager Jordan Thrasher we're fantastic to work with. They were always prompt at responding to any questions we had and made the entire project run extremely smooth. Each phase of the project was completed on or before the estimated dates and the contractors that did work were always courteous and did an amazing job. We couldn't be happier with the pool and they did a top notch job! We couldn't have made a better decision by choosing this company to do our pool.

California Pools are the pros in the Valley. Specifically, Robert Lory (project manager) and Rebecca Schulte (scheduler) were most helpful building our pool/spa. Even during the pandemic, they were always in touch, letting us know the status and of any potential delays. If you want to build a pool and/or spa, give California Pools a call, they will treat you well!

My wife and I decided to put in a pool and after looking at many companies, we decided on California Pools & Landscape. We were very impressed by their showroom in Scottsdale and were excited to sit down and meet with Ryan and see our backyard transform into 3-D pictures with a gorgeous pool. They are correct that it is a stressful time because there are many things going on at once. However, we had many helpful people along the way that made the experience easier. Stephen and Cammy were so helpful whenever we had any questions and they explained in detail when there was an issue with permitting or something that may need to be changed. The scheduling department, Sara, was amazing with keeping us informed with what was going on. She returned our emails right away and was always on top of our schedule. We are very happy with our finished product and have already enjoyed the peacefulness of our backyard and cannot wait to go swimming this summer. We have attached two before and two after photos. We would recommend California Pools and Landscape to help transform your backyard.

Other than my sales guy Robbie trying to put the worse tree possible next to my pool. Everything with construction went well. Jordan was always there to help and answer his phone all the time. Made sure to explain procedures and schedule and how things work. Overall, it was a pleasant experience from construction and the people that came out to do the work.

California Pools and Landscape recently completed a pool and hardscape remodel in our backyard. We understood going into this project that there were some supplier and contractor delays to be expected during this unusually busy time for pool and construction businesses. While our project took a couple of weeks longer to complete than estimated, the work was done to our total satisfaction. California Pools kept us apprised of all steps in the process, as well as time frames and dates to expect contractors to be on site. All California Pools employees we interacted with were professional, knowledgeable and willing to work with us regarding scheduling. Our project supervisor, Mark B., was always in communication with us and on site when needed. His depth of knowledge in building pools was invaluable to our project. Ashton V., our project coordinator, was always there for us whenever we called. Her communication skills and willingness to do whatever it takes to satisfy the customer are remarkable. All of the contractors involved in our project were professional, always showed up as planned and helpful at every turn. We are totally satisfied with our completed project. We would highly recommend California Pools and Landscape to anyone looking for a new pool or remodel.

When I started my pool with California Pool Sara was out on leave; however thank goodness she returned, as she is the secret weapon at CPL without a doubt. I was losing my mind with all of the unprofessional unpleasantries that I was experiencing. Sara moved mountains and people to get this pool completed at my home, Michael was a big help in supporting her efforts. I loved working with them both. Sara you are an absolute game changer and most valued in my book of all the staff at CPL, never worked with someone when my troubles seemed endless, your actions where momentous. Thanks Sara and Michael, I now have a great property to enjoy!!! nothing short of amazing....

California Pools was excellent! The team of Mike Lillis (designer), Darrin Castillo (superintendent) and Marissa Puzz (construction coordinator) was awesome. Mike listened to our desires for our backyard pool and designed a pool that met our needs and accommodated multiple change orders along the way. Darrin was on-site throughout the construction process and provided periodic updates and pictures since we weren't always in town during the construction process. Marissa was amazing, keeping us informed of the schedule and facilitating schedule changes during the construction process to accommodate our personal schedule while keeping the project moving forward. The app was excellent, providing insight into the schedule progress, allowing messaging with the construction team and providing the opportunity to make progress payments. Both Marissa and Darrin did a great job keeping us informed throughout the entire construction process and provided very timely responses to our questions and requests via the messaging app. The pool start-up and orientation provided by the service technician, Kyle Rochford, was excellent as well. We had a few minor punch list items following the final walk through and start-up which were addressed very quickly and resolved. We are very happy with the finished product. Excellent job by the California Pools team!

California Pools was phenomenal to work with! Our designer was Jacob who really listened to what we wanted in a new backyard renovation. We were tired of trying to maintain an outdated pool, outdoor kitchen, and kiva fireplace. He helped us stay within our budget and worked with us to create a beautiful and functional backyard masterpiece that we are truly enjoying now. Working with him was a joy and getting to know him personally, as well. Tim who was our project manager and Bill who oversaw the hardscape crew were meticulous about their work. They wanted the job done right and to our satisfaction. Jacob and Tim promptly returned our calls/texts and answered any and all questions that we had with patience. The hardscape crew was outstanding, their attention to detail was impressive. Our project included retiling the lower patio and building a bridge to connect it to an upper 2-tiered patio that has a pergola, hot tub and fire pit area. I would highly recommend California Pools to anyone thinking of creating a beautiful outdoor space.

Robby did the design layout for our pool and the finished product looks like we expected. Sean Beavers was the project manager and we were impressed with how well the job was handled. It is a very tight backyard and they did a great job keeping things in order, as orderly as you can with piles of dirt, trench and piping. Leann kept us informed on the timing. As with most projects, there are some issues that come up. All issues were addressed in a timely manner and absolutely no issues at this time. CA Pools was not the lowest price for the proposals that we received but we chose them due to the reputation and most times you get what you pay for. We would definitely recommend CA Pools.

I started looking for a pool company two years ago. California pools was the only company able to have a pool done by this summer. I am very glad I found them!! From the beginning (design) to finish it's been a great experience! I signed in August and they finished in June. My designer Brian went over the details with cost and created a beautiful design for the pool and decking. I have dogs so I let them know I need to be notified when someone is coming into the backyard so I can lock them inside. During the whole process ( except for one exception) they kept me updated on dates and the crew showed up that day or the next. Jordan the superintendent was very accessible if I had questions. He was super helpful with the city inspection! He made sure everything was going smoothly and being done correctly. He kept me updated on dates for construction as well. Everyone was very friendly and even when nothing was happening I received messages about what we were waiting for. All in all a great experience and I love my pool!

We were thoroughly impressed with California Pools. Vina and Matt were excellent and communicative through the process. They always got back to us in a timely fashion. Brian was the only designer of 4 pool companies that we talked with that found a solution for our pool equipment, notice it is not in the backyard!!! it is on the side of the house and keeps the pool/spa area quiet. And the Porcelain looks amazing. Was it perfect, no, but it was very good, and when there was an issue they gave me choices, suggesting the best for us long term. Thank you all, I would highly recommend CalPools Queen Creek!! Stan.

I would have CP build a pool any day of the week. Everyone was kind and helpful...always...even after they were paid. We had a couple minor things to attend to.after we closed and they happily attended to our concerns. Marc our first team member he was super helpful through the entire project...he was attentive to all our needs and how we were going to use our pool. At 6:00PM on a Friday he picked up his phone to answer a question that our landscaper had...could not be more pleased with the job the entire CP team did. Thanks CP!

Joel Parron has been patient and wonderful to work with. The workmanship on our pool and mini golf green design turned out beautifully. We haven't had a chance to go into the pool yet since we had it built right before winter started, but he still comes around to make sure everything is working well and even addresses things he noticed. Brian McGrath. That is what you need to know. Brian McGrath. He has made our experience. We had done a ton of research finding a pool company for a new build and met with several other companies. After meeting BrIan for a consultation, learning about the pool options, and seeing his design, our choice was VERY clear. Brian has been there for us and is incredible! He does not shy away from all of the tough questions you may have. We have friends also doing a new build pool and recommendEd Brian. They also have went with him. I have seen their impressive design and happy they have Brian having their back. I wouldnโ€™t want it any other way.

Q: How are pools priced?

Pool pricing starts with a standard base cost, but it varies based on the design features, materials, and equipment you choose. Site-specific factors may also influence the final cost. Our experienced designers collaborate with you to create a custom pool tailored to your unique needs and vision. After your in-home consultation, you'll receive a detailed proposal and personalized plan. Not ready to meet a designer? Get an instant estimate with our online project calculator!

Q: What is the best way to begin planning for a pool?

Our design staff can meet with you at no cost. If you live in the home where the pool will be built, we will measure the yard, consider how construction equipment can enter the yard, discuss potential equipment location in relation to existing utilities and the pool, and begin to discuss your desires. This allows us to create a project to match your lifestyle needs, desired look and budget. If you are building a new home, the pool can be designed from plot plans and a site inspection. Through early planning, you can often save money and achieve a more integrated final product.

Q: How do I decide what shape and features I would like?

Our Backyard Dreambook app on the Apple Store and Google Play displays thousands of or projects. Browse through our extensive galleries or create a Dreambook of your very own! We feel that one of the reasons we have won so many design awards is our ability to listen and hone in on the plan and features that will best serve the client. In addition, we can develop a color rendering of the pool you and our designer will create. It will show you of what the pool will look like from your patio or from a birds eye view.

Q: What pumps, filters, cleaners, water features, automatic systems, deck products, interior surfaces, masonry effects and lighting are best?

We feel that our job is to thoroughly explain all the pool features that may interest you. This explanation will include the positive and the negative traits of each product, including costs, how it works, and a recommendation depending upon the needs and desires you have expressed. We feel that our clients make really great decisions for themselves when complete information is provided.

Q: How do I pick a pool builder? Isnโ€™t every pool the same in its basic construction?

California Pools & Landscape enjoys a solid reputation for our unique construction practices and providing cutting-edge technology and constant customer communication. We believe in building the โ€œbest valueโ€ into every project.

After our designer completes the design of your custom backyard living area with you, the plan is prepared for construction. The CAD construction plans are created, and any special engineering is generated. Our processing department, construction team and designer review these plans together and then apply for permits. The project is then painted on the ground followed by a site visit from your construction superintendent. This is his first of many quality control inspections.

The next phase of the process begins with the excavation of the pool, spa and any sunken bar areas. We construct our pools with vertically excavated walls, create slight radius at the transition to the floor and flat floors. This type of construction requires more steel and concrete but our customers find a larger, more usable pool. This method of building also allows us to provide the best warranty in the pool industry. We can warranty your shell for as long as you own your home and this warranty can be transferred to a new owner. What really makes this building practice even more special is it also allows us to warranty the pool against rust โ€œmigration or bleed throughโ€ from the steel in the shell to the surface of the pool. I would ask this of any pool company you are considering constructing your pool.

We build all of our decks specifically for expansive soil. All of our poured decks have a continuous 4-inch turndown to prevent moisture from getting under the deck. Our decks are not tied into our shell with sky bars. If the ground underneath is expansive and needs to move, we want it to move independently from the pool shell. By floating the deck we can prevent damage to the shell and elaborate repairs to the surface of the deck.

At California Pools & Landscape we provide technology that helps reduce the cost of running, maintaining and using your pool. We can offer control systems, multiple speed pumps and sanitation systems that can benefit you for many years to come. We are also continually searching for ways to reduce the carbon footprint of our product. LED pool and spa lights are now available and offer lower wattage than standard pool lights typically used in the industry. You will get many more hours of usage before the light bulbs need to be changed. The additional benefit to LED lights is that the customer has the ability to change the color of the pool water at night. The LED lights come with an array of colors and color shows that can be upgraded to run by remote.

Q: How long will my pool take to build?

California Pools averages just six to eight weeks of actual construction time from excavation for the majority of the pools we build. This is a point of pride for us, particularly when you consider the complexity of many of our pools. Specialized products and/or material availability could possibly increase construction time. Many factors can combine or larger scale projects that affect construction time. We find that comprehensive pool planning and design can reduce changes and unexpected delays.

Q: What should I know about pool layout?

The pool, runs, deck and masonry are laid out and painted in your yard before any building starts. This layout is also used as a guide for excavators when they dig your pool. We ask that you approve the location and shape of your project prior to scheduling the dig. Because itโ€™s a flat representation of your pool, the layout will appear much smaller than the finished pool. We lay out the pool 6โ€ larger in every direction. In other words, a pool that will finish 30โ€ฒ long must be laid out and dug 31โ€ฒ. This allows for 6โ€ณ thick concrete on the pool walls.

Q: Iโ€™ve heard there is a lot of dust, noise and destruction at dig. Is this true?

There is no gentle way to remove 15 to 30 dump truck loads of dirt out of a backyard. This will be one of the noisiest and is certainly the dustiest stage of construction. It is also one of the most exciting. We routinely see kids of all ages with their noses pressed against the window as the pool begins to take shape.

Protecting plants and existing landscape is a must because anything between the street and the pool that is not cared for will be ground into the soil by this heavy machinery. Fences need to be removed, dogs put up, and the right machinery must meet the conditions in your particular yard. Your pool designer will discuss the options and pricing with you when you design your pool.

Q: What is a rock (hard) dig, and how are the extra costs involved handled?

A rock excavation is encountered when the machinery thatโ€™s has been planned for your yard cannot dig the pool without using special techniques and equipment due to the soil conditions. If the crew finds that their machinery is incapable of the dig, the excavators will expose the soil condition by digging a hole and leaving it open. Typically, we will secure three bids and get your approval on the extra costs prior to proceeding.

If you suspect you are in a rocky area, we can secure a bid and make it part of the original agreement. This can save time and allow for the extra costs to be financed. Many times excavators can dig a rock pool in about the same time as a pool in softer soil. To accomplish this task, we contract with highly skilled machine operators. These workers are more experienced and skilled than typical laborers, providing peace of mind that the job will be done right.

Q: How do I know that my plumbing is done correctly and will not leak?

In addition to using Schedule 40 PVC (very thick pipe), we keep all plumbing under pressure throughout the construction process. We routinely check these pressure readings to ensure that the plumbing is secure. Our plumbers follow a detailed plan for the location of every feature, pool return and drain. You will notice that pipes are protruding out from the pool dig. These will be cut off near the end of construction and will finish flush to the final pool wall.

Q: When is my equipment plumbed in place?

If you live in the house where we are building the pool, we will install the equipment the day we plumb the pool. If your home is not occupied or is under construction, we will delay the equipment set until you are in the house. This is necessary because unfortunately there are people out there who will walk off with your pool equipment if it is easily accessible. If you own the home and the equipment is stolen, your insurance will cover the loss and will pay the replacement cost. From a technical standpoint, once the equipment is attached and installed, you own it.

Q: What does steel reinforcing do for my pool?

The steel rebar is installed in a grid pattern. Depending on the loads and soil condition, it can be 12โ€ณ apart, 6โ€ณ apart, or in rare cases 3โ€ณ apart. Our civil engineers work out the exact pattern to be used for your pool, and this is part of the engineering required for your pool permit and for our structural specifications. The steel is blocked 2โ€ to 3โ€ณ off of the excavated floor and walls of the pool. It greatly strengthens concrete by providing tensile strength.

Be careful, although we cover or bend the ends of the bars to protect people, the wires used to tie the steel together are very sharp. Please ensure the safety of children and pets. A scratch from the steel or tie wire can infect easily and may require a tetanus vaccination.

Q: What protects my pool from electrical problems?

In most cases, a trench will be dug from your electric panel to the equipment location. By code, this conduit must be metal, wrapped with insulation and buried 6โ€ณ underground. It is important to mark any sprinkler lines or other obstructions that must be protected. The conduit must remain uncovered until the city inspects it. GFI circuits protect all light and electrical plugs. These are also used near sinks and bathrooms inside your house. GFI-protected circuits instantly trip and shut down when contact is made with water. In addition, all steel, motors and metal within 5โ€ฒ of the pool are grounded. You may notice small copper wire attached to metal windows, fences, handrails and diving boards.

Q: When does the city inspect my pool?

The first inspection occurs after electric and before shotcrete. The city inspector ensures that all electrical connections and work are proper. They also review the poolโ€™s structural engineering and steelwork. They do not inspect the shape of the pool, pool depth, or in most cases, pool plumbing, as these are not safety or code issues. They will check the poolโ€™s location to ensure it is out of all setbacks and easements. We typically have very little problem and get a green tag to proceed quickly.

In some cases, inspectors will ask to see more engineering verification than is normally necessary. We provide this at our expense. While the delay can be frustrating, it is better to be safe now than sorry later. Remember that these inspectors are trying to ensure the best and safest possible construction. We do not control their schedules, but in most cases, they are remarkably responsive.

Q: When will my pool start looking like a pool?

The pool really begins to take shape when the concrete is placed. Steps and benches are formed, spas take shape, and the pool begins to look like a pool. Shotcrete (premixed concrete) is sprayed into your pool through a hose under pressure. Itโ€™s noisy, messy, surprisingly artistic and fun to watch.

A curtain is put up around the pool to block the over-spray from getting on you house. Shotcrete dries and gets hard very quickly. As a matter of fact, it can dry too quickly. It is necessary for you to water-cure your shotcrete to slow the drying time. In the summer, wet the pool down at least five times a day, more often if you can. In the cooler months (temperatures below 80 degrees F), two to three times a day is fine. Spray water on the sides until it starts to โ€œsheetโ€ off. Then move on to another part of the pool. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete a pool watering.

Donโ€™t worry, you canโ€™t over water a pool. A puddle will accumulate in the bottom of the pool, and thatโ€™s ok; we will pump it out later. You will also notice cracks forming in the pool, particularly in the floor. This is normal. These are shrinkage cracks and do not affect the structural integrity of the pool. The shotcrete shell needs to cure for three to four days before we can proceed with construction.

Q: What has to happen before my deck is installed?

We must have all rockwork installed if elements such as boulders or waterfalls are part of your pool before we start decking. This is also a good time to install any masonry such as barbecues, fire pits, benches and equipment walls. Any gas lines, landscape sprinklers and drip lines, landscape lighting lines, etc., that are to be run under the deck should be in before we form the deck. This is also a good time to review and make sure your deck is design is still the way you want it. Extra costs will result if you make changes to the deck after it is installed.

Q: What are my responsibilities concerning the deck?

Hereโ€™s where the pool starts to look really pretty. We always find that once the deck gets started, our customers get very excited and start planning their first pool party.

The deck crew will come out and put up forms (thin strips of wood) outlining the deck. You will see where any steps and drains go. You must approve these forms prior to the pouring of deck. Once the deck is poured, it cannot be changed. Itโ€™s a good idea to double check the color and texture you have chosen to make sure it is still your favorite. The concrete for the deck will be poured into the forms and troweled to a smooth finish. If you have Kool Deckยฎ, it will be applied now. If you have Cal Deck, it will be applied when the concrete is dry enough to let it adhere.

Other types of toppings and deck, such as flagstone, tiles, pavers or artistic stone, have their own requirements. Regardless of what kind of deck you have, stop water-curing your pool, do not walk on or get water on the deck, and do not cover the deck with anything for at least 48 hours. Concrete does not dry evenly so it will appear to be darker in some places and lighter in others. Donโ€™t worry, it will reach a consistent hue after it gets through a full summerโ€™s heat.

Q: How do I make my pool safe and ready to pass final inspection?

Access walls, gates and springs (gates must be self-closing), sliding door closures, window locks, wrought iron fencing, etc., are all done at this time. Types of required barriers โ€” which restrict access to the pool โ€” can differ depending on the city you live in. The pool cannot be finished until your city is satisfied that all required barriers are in place and functioning. The inspector will check for barriers and you must be at home during the inspection to demonstrate them. Please see your designer or construction scheduler for more information.

Q: When do I get rid of this construction mess?

We would like your help in policing any personal trash. It is absolutely our policy that gum wrappers, drink cups, lunch sacks, etc., never be left on your property. We consider it to be a great help if you let us know at any time you see trash of this kind left in your yard. By staying on top of this problem together, we can keep it to a minimum!

The unavoidable construction mess begins at shotcrete as the concrete truck gets cleaned out and continues until the deck gets cleaned up just prior to the pool being finished. Trenches are all filled, light grading is done, and the yard is raked. Basically we make everything neat and presentable. Landscaping is not provided unless it was part of your pool contract.

Q: How do I get the go-ahead to finish the pool?

We will call the city for a pre-interior finish inspection. This is where the city checks that all of your barriers are to code. Types of required barriers can differ depending on the city you live in. We cannot schedule a specific time for an inspection, nor will the city agree to a specific inspection time. Because the inspector needs access to your home to check some of the required barriers, you must be there to give him/her access. This can be frustrating, but if the inspector cannot inspect all barriers, he/she will leave and we will need to call for another inspection. We are at the mercy of the city here. We cannot legally proceed with construction until the city gives us permission.

Your construction scheduler can advise you of the barrier code requirements if you are installing them yourself. In any event, whether we install them or you install them, you still need to be home for the inspection so the inspector can enter your home. Some cities do not have interior barrier requirements and final inspection goes much easier there.

Q: How do they get the plaster or Sea Glass Pebble Sheen into my pool?

At last! All interior finishes are pumped into the pool from the street.

Plaster: Plaster will be applied, and the plasterers will start your hose to fill the pool as soon as they are done. Do not turn off the water until your pool is full! Let the pool fill all of the way up until it reaches about an inch below the deck; then turn the water off. This is slightly overfilled but you will be backwashing, and it helps to have a little extra water in the pool until the plaster dust is filtered out. Follow the plaster care instructions given to you by California Pools.

The plaster may appear a little mottled because the plaster does not dry evenly. (Yes, it really does dry under water). Some parts stay wet longer and so appear darker, like a wet spot on a shirt. Brushing the pool and chemical balancing are extremely important on a plaster pool. Plan to spend a lot of time during that first week caring for your pool.

Sea Glass Pebbleยฎ: Your Sea Glass Pebble will be applied on the first day and acid washed the next. The acid wash exposes the pebble aggregate. The workers will start the hose filling the pool as soon as they finish acid washing. Do not turn off the water until your pool is full! Let the pool fill all the way up until it is about one-half the way up the skimmer opening. The color will appear slightly mottled for about three months. It takes that long for the chemicals to finish the curing and bleaching process.

You will have a much easier time taking care of the pebble finish than a plaster finish. The productโ€™s main and popular feature is that it is naturally forgiving. You will see variations in stone colors and concrete exposure. This is why Sea Glass Pebble camouflages many of the traditional problems with pool plasterโ€”it is to be expected and is desirable.

Q: When do I learn how to use the pool?

At startup we turn the pool on and check the system to make sure everything is working properly. Then, at the orientation, you will be told everything you wanted to know about a pool and probably even more than that. Plus, we show you how to work the pump, filter, light and the rest of the equipment. Video cameras are permitted and encouraged.

You can also refer to our Pool Care FAQs here some of the most common questions. Also, you can request a re-instruction at no charge within 30 days. We recommend you wait about a week before requesting a re-instruction. By then, you will have specific questions that can be addressed.
