Small Backyard Pool Design Ideas: Phoenix Spool

Our Pool Design Ideas series was created to help spark ideas of what might be a good fit for you in your backyard. When you’re starting the process of building a pool, there are numerous decisions to make. A great place to get started is with the pool design and design elements. Whether it’s a freeform or geometric design, with modern, Tuscan, or retro design elements; it’s really about the look that fits your home.

At California Pools & Landscape, we’ve been creating custom pools in the valley of the sun for more than 35 years. We’ve designed thousands of pools in all shapes and sizes, to meet the desires of every client.

About This Phoenix Backyard

This Phoenix backyard is on the small side, but was full of potential. Our design team wanted to maximize the space by including a pool and fire pit in the backyard. The geometric design of the spool takes advantage of the usable area in the yard which is tied together by artificial turf.

The focal point of the backyard is the pool wall with three water features. The 24-foot long wall is covered in a Moroccan Mist stacked stone and features three 8-inch Rust long scuppers that add an ambiance to the outdoor environment when water runs through them. The Mediterranean Sea Glass Pebble interior pairs naturally with the Caldera Blue Agate waterline tile. The out of the ground spool is capped with Cool White artistic pavers that wrap around the exterior of the pool’s border edge. As a special design touch, the waterline tile is also installed at the base of the out of ground pool, adding an extra color pop.

The spool is 20’ x 10’ and offers areas for relaxation and escaping the heat. There is a 35-square foot baja shelf that doubles as a step into the pool. There is also a pool bench in the opposite corner of the pool that creates an extra destination area in the water.

Incorporating Design Elements Throughout The Yard

The design elements in this small backyard tie together very nicely. The fire pit offers a destination to enjoy on cool nights and entertain. The firepit is 3.5’x 3.5’ painted with a grey stucco and capped off with Cool White artistic pavers. The artistic pavers carry throughout the design as the base for the firepit deck and the back deck coming out of the home. A 10-foot wide accent wall sits behind the fire pit, covered in Spirit Old Maple tile, which adds a natural wood look.

The landscape design also contributes to the natural feel of the yard and adds several design accents. Two large Date Palms sit behind the water wall and accentuate the focal point of the yard. Two Ficus trees sit on either side of the yard with 13 dwarf myrtle shrubs distributed in between them. Three Italian cypress trees sit directly behind the firepit, adding an extra layer of serenity. There are also several more shrubs, vines and accent plants in this backyard.
