Pool Design Ideas: Grecian and Tuscan Pool Designs
Our Pool Design Ideas series was created to help spark ideas of what might be a good fit for you in your backyard. When you’re starting the process of building a pool, there are numerous decisions to make. A great place to get started is with the pool design and design elements. Whether it’s a freeform or geometric design, with modern, Grecian, Tuscan pool designs, or retro design elements, it’s really about the look that fits your home.
At California Pools & Landscape, we’ve been creating custom pools in the valley of the sun for more than 36 years. We’ve designed hundreds of Grecian pools of all shapes and sizes, to meet the desires of every client.
About This Mesa Backyard
These Mesa homeowners were looking to add a pool and spa in the backyard to create the ultimate outdoor entertainment area. As a real estate agent, this client was looking to improve her home’s value while allowing the surrounding desert environment to come into the yard. Creating additional areas around the pool to host events, entertain and relax was also important for this Mesa client.
The focal point from inside the home is the raised curved wall that cuts into the Grecian pool and serves as a natural backdrop. Two short columns sit on either side of the raised water wall that also have water features of their own, adding to the symmetry of the design.
Tuscan design elements are incorporated throughout the design, with columns that support the large shade structure, stacked stone and fireplace design features. The materials selected also contribute greatly to the design aesthetic. Our design team worked in tandem with the client to ensure there was a seamless transition between the interior design features of the home and their new outdoor retreat.

Grecian Pool Design
Creating a natural design to match the feel of the home was at the top of the list for our design team. This grecian pool with its 32-inch raised water wall instantly grabs your eye when looking out from the home. The wall is covered with Bark Stacked Stone and capped with the Noche Travertine.
The Blue Granite Pebble Interior sparkles in this Grecian pool, creating an oasis in this desert environment. The Turquoise Mirage waterline tile adds a vibrant color pop and contrasts beautifully with Noche travertine and coping.
Another design highlight on this Grecian pool is the 80sq ft baja shelf that doubles as an entrance into the pool. The shelf sits 9-inches below the water line offering a great opportunity to cool off and relax in the pool. A second smaller baja shelf sits closer to the spa, adding a second option to enter the pool and transition between the spa.
The raised spa offers a wonderful option for entertainment and relaxation. Our design team incorporated the spa to sit above the pool with a spillway to add to the ambiance in the yard. The spa sits in close proximity to the fireplace, offering a winning combination for cool nights in the desert.

Incorporating Design Elements Throughout The Yard
The outdoor kitchen is a destination of its own, offering a large area to entertain and escape the sunshine. It features a bbq grill, drop in cooler and plenty of counter space to cook and entertain. The outdoor kitchen is covered with the Bark stacked stone and the Noche travertine sits on the bar surface to compliment the design. A raised bar top sits above the cooking surface and adds another destination for entertainment and serving up ice cold drinks by the pool.
The fireplace sits on the other end of the backyard, adding a special destination for night time enjoyment. The manor style fireplace is 7” tall and features seat walls around it that are capped with the Noche travertine. The Bark stacked stone also is featured around the base of the unit for a continuity throughout the design.
